-There are a lot of Sportsters out there that do not have their original Bendix carb attached to them. \\ +76-78 Keihin carbs do not have an HD number on it or stamp pad for numbering. The Keihin number is stamped in the flange. \\
-Consequently, this page will try to bring to light at least some the differences in these carbs. \\ +The best way to identify 79-up Harley Keihin carb is to read the Keihin number. \\
-One could say it's blessing that Bendix carbs for Harleys will interchange\\ +It's the first 4 characters stamped on the (Rchoke cable side just above the bowl. \\
-One could also say it's a curse. \\ +The HD part number on some models is on a sticker placed on the top of the carb. \\
-Bendix carbs for Sportsters were set up for Sportsters. \\ +Older carbs either weren't labeled or the sticker may either be missing or unreadable. \\
-Bendix carbs for other HD models were set up for the needs of those motors. \\ +
-Changing the jetting alone (on other intended model carbs) to Sportster specs may still not give the results intended. \\ +
-The 27155-72A Sportster carb has another number stamped into the ID pad (13732). \\ +
-This Bendix part number denotes certain configuration carb body and / or internal parts. \\ +
-**Change Letters**: \\ +
-You may have noticed a letter beside the HD part number or it may be arbitrarily stamped in the ID pad away from the HD number. \\ +
-Carbs with changes made during the build phase had the change letter included at the end of the HD stamped part number. \\ +
-Carbs with changes made at the dealership (customer owned bikeshad the change letter stamped into the existing ID pad...somewhere. \\ +
-This explains the arbitrary location of some of the change letters. \\ +
-For example, an "A" stamped into the ID pad away from the HD part# is a Bendix modification letter, not a suffix letter to the HD part#. \\+

-**Bendix model 13479**: \\+As for interchangeability between butterfly carbs; \\
+Any Harley Keihin butterfly carb will interchange but the ones for big twins will need to be re-jetted for a Sportster engine. \\
+The chart on the [[techtalk:ih:carb01#sportster_keihin_carburetors_by_year_model|Basic carb information page]] has the factory jetting information for Sportsters. \\
+You may have to go up or down from there depending on what's already in your carb and your specific engine/A/C/exhaust setup. \\

-The model 13479 carb was used on FLPFLH and FX model Harley Davidsons. \\ +Also76-78 Sportster carbs have a 38mm venture (measured at the smallest point near the throttle plate). \\
-The letters AB, C, Dand F stamped near the basic Bendix part number (13479) are change letters. \\ +79-87 Sportster carbs have a 34mm venture. Howeverthe carbs installed on BT's may be 38mm. \\
-Meaning they denote certain changes made per carb model. \\+To find the venture size of the one you havecut a piece of cereal / kleenex box cardboard 34mm wide and insert it into the most narrow part of the venturi. ((IronMick of the XLFORUM http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?p=4457592&highlight=keihin+bowl#post4457592)) \\
 +Tight fit = 34 mm, loose fit = 38 mm. \\

-The following changes are noted in Technical Service Bulletin (614A). ((HD TSB 614A dated April 14, 1971)) \\ +See the pics below for a visual confirmation of year model features. \\
-  * **Change for 13479A**: +
-    * The float setting was changed from 1/8" to 3/16" to remedy a rich condition occurring at steady speeds. +
-    * The clearance between the float tang and the wire clip on the needle decreased. \\ It should be .005"-.010" between the top of the tang and bottom of the portion of spring that hangs over the tang. +
-  * **Change for 13479B**: +
-    * A new choke valve has detents with spring loaded plunger engaging the detents to provide positive positioning throughout the choking range. +
-    * New part (27664-71 choke shaft replaces 27664-70. +
-    * New part 27665-71 plunger added. +
-    * 27666-71 plunger spring added. +
-  * **Change for 13479C & 13479D**: \\ Changes were made to correct over-rich mixtures in the intermediate (off idle) speed range. +
-    * A new idle jet has two .06mm holes instead of one .08mm hole near the screw end. +
-      * New part (27725-71) idle jet has the letter 'A' stamped on the screw end and replaces 27723-71. +
-      * The idle air bleed hole in the carb body was enlarged from 3.35mm to 3.60mm (app. 9/64: in diameter). \\ Idle jet (27725-71 must be used with the drilled out passage in this carb for proper carburetion. \\ Dealers could drill the bleed hole and stamp the change letter //if// there was a problem with the field unit's performance. +
-      * The accelerator pump shaft had 2 additional holes to allow for an increase or decrease of quantity of fuel delivery. \\ Factory setting for the pin was the center hole.+

 +===== (B50A) =====
 +L1976 27153-76 Sportster '76 only' Keihin butterfly carb. \\
 +Float bowl (27359-76). \\
 +Accelerator pump (27364-76), inside casting# (1-2). \\
+It has a solid choke, meaning that the choke plate (butterfly) has no spring action in the linkage. ((Dr Dick of the XLFORUM http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1035453)) \\
+You can begin to identify -76 only carb cause there is no plastic pieces on the choke shaft. \\
+It also has a idle mixture adjusting screw that was not hidden under a plug. It was rite out in the open where you can get to it. \\
+That is what you can tell from the outside. \\
+{{:techtalk:ih:carb:l76_keihin_carb_1_by_ddddylan.jpg?direct&300|}} ((photo by DDDDylan of the XLFORUM http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?p=4428805&highlight=keihin+bowl#post4428805)) {{:techtalk:ih:carb:l76_keihin_carb_2_by_ddddylan.jpg?direct&300|}} ((photo by DDDDylan of the XLFORUM http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?p=4428805&highlight=keihin+bowl#post4428805)) \\
 +
+The real scoop to tell if it's -76 is on the inside. \\
+Inside, there was no hole drilled between the main jet well and the low speed well to feed the low speed jet. \\
+That made it the only one that didn't use the low speed jet rubber plug you see when you take off the float bowl. \\
+This hole can be seen when you remove the rubber plug and look at the wall between the wells on 77 and up Keihin butterfly carbs. \\
+77-up carbs have a hole to connect the low speed well to the main well. 76 only had no hole. \\
+If you have a 76 only and install rubber plug, your bike won't run. \\
+In the float bowl, the accelerator pump discharge nozzle has a .040" orifice, (stamped 100), as apposed to the .031" (stamped 75) used on 77 up. \\
+But most importantly, it didn't have an accelerator pump "relief" port. You can observe the relief action (if you have a 77-up bowl). \\
+Remove the bowl and the "L" shaped linkage that actuates the pump. Drop the "L" into its hole on the side of the bowl. \\
+Pour enough fuel in the bowl so that you have it about 1/4 full and actuate the pump by depressing the "L" link (don't squirt on yourself). \\
+On the 77-up, there is a little hole down on the bowl floor that fuel squirts out of, as well as the brass nozzle at the gasket surface. \\
+The quicker you press, the more goes thru the "relief". \\
+All "relief" bowls have a steel rod installed under the discharge nozzle. This rod is free in its movement and you can hear it if you shake the bowl. \\
+This rod acts as "variable" resistance to fuel flow to the actual discharge nozzle. \\
+If the pump is actuated slowly enough, all fuel will exit the relief because there isnt enough force to lift the rod. \\
 +
+'76 only' didn't have the rod at all. Instead, it used a check ball assembly in the small cover that is screwed onto the bowl (the one with the 3 holes). \\
+When you shake the small cover when it's removed from the bowl, you will hear the ball. There is no ball on 77-up. \\
+'76 only' has even more differences but those are the biggies. \\
 +
+The JP Cycles Deluxe Carb Rebuild Kit (4000050) will work. ((DeeDay of the XLFORUM http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1035453)) \\

-The cable attachment to the throttle shaft is in a different position which changes the geometry of the cable action. \\
-With the 36 mm carb, the cable pulls from over center with the stock outer jacket bracket. \\
-As you can see in the left picture, even with a modified bracket, the geometry isn’t great. \\
-The picture on the right is the same 36mm carb with the correct throttle shaft and return spring for a 38mm carb added. \\
-The throttle return spring is substantially stronger than the original (for the 36mm). \\
-It also required an additional spring to properly return. \\
