-===== Routing lines with an oil cooler ===== +====== Rebuilding the Kidney Tank Oil Cap ======
-78 XLH with oil cooler. \\ +These pics show how the oil cap comes apart. \\
-Photos by IronMick of the XLFORUM ((http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=920306)) \\+Here is what you have when you flip it over and clean it up. \\

-  - The return line here is coming out of the front of the pump, going up to the cooler, then back along the frame. +With the C-clip removedhold the round end that the dipstick comes out of. \\
-  Then it goes thru the clip, and up behind the cam cover. +Turn the wing nut counter clockwise to unscrew it from the rest of the assembly. \\
-  - The oil return from the pump (or in this case from the cooler) continues from the clip. \\ Note, the return line keeps the feed line away from the chain. \\ There are two zip ties on the return line; \\ One at the bottom of the vertical frame member (about where that red cable is). \\ This keeps the line back from the chain. \\ Another on the squared frame member at the top to keep the line up.+The lower section will slide to the side and then lift out one side at a time. \\
+This is not necessary to replace the gasket or the O-ring but it may be for something more in depth. \\

-Note: If you ever want to remove the solenoid you are somewhat screwed \\ +|Right against the cap you have C-clipPull it out.|  Unscrew the dipstick from the cap.  ||
-You cannot get at those two little 1/4" bolts because the lines are in the way. \\ +|{{:techtalk:ih:oil:rebuilding_the_kidney_tank_oil_cap_1_by_shameless.jpg?direct&300|}}|{{:techtalk:ih:oil:rebuilding_the_kidney_tank_oil_cap_2_by_shameless.jpg?direct&300|}}|{{:techtalk:ih:oil:rebuilding_the_kidney_tank_oil_cap_3_by_shameless.jpg?direct&300|}}|
-And you must use socket as there is not enough space between the bolt head and the sol to fit a wrench\\ +
-It is possible to get it out thru the hole in the bottom of the battery box, but it is much quicker to remove the battery box completely\\ +
-Which involves removing a whole inventory of parts. \\ +

-  - The vent starts at the cam cover fitting. +
-  - This is the most difficult part of the whole thing. \\ If these are not perfect you cannot get the starter motor in. \\ Vent line on the bottom/front, oil line running under the starter drive housing with no kink! and the starter cable woven between the other two. +
-  - The oil line and the starter cable go thru the big grommet. \\ The the vent goes behind the oil tank mount. \\ There is no extra length on the starter cable - it just fits right against the boss. \\ NOTE: The vent line was pulled up away from the chain and with a zip tie around the oil tank mount. +

+There is an O-ring at the top of the shaft between the cap and the wing nut. \\
+If it's flattened, it may cause an oil leak on the top of my tank. \\

+|Check the O-ring.|This one was replaced with one from an Evo head rebuild (bigger O-ring). \\ The inside diameter was a little big but it fit inside the groove and was thick enough to seat against the cap.||
