**Seat Cast Webbing, Key Switch and Coil Mounting**: ((Dr Dick of the XLFORUM http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1338293&page=3)) \\ | **VIN Numbers**: Starting with the 1970 season, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is stamped on the right side of the engine case between the cylinders (except 1970-E1971). The same VIN is stamped into both the engine and the frame. However, the only legal VIN number for Harley’s produced from 1970-up is on the frame. The engine number now serves no purpose for vehicle identification. But the motor number (if not altered) does show if the motor and frame were factory issued. | **Replacement Frames**: With the 1970 model release in late summer 1969, Harley changed it's procedures for replacement cases and frames. ((Chuckthebeatertruck of the XLFORUM https://www.xlforum.net/forum/sportster-motorcycle-forum/sportster-motorcycle-era-specific-and-model-specific/ironhead-sportster-motorcycle-talk-1957-1985/4958491-72-vin-on-a-73-frame/page3#post4958667)) Prior to August/September 1969, dealers COULD order unstamped cases or frames. They did not have to prove these were replacement parts. Dealers then restamped the numbers as needed and if they were on the ball, they filled out the correct paperwork with their state for a restamped VIN. Hence, prior to late 1969, a restamp could use pretty much any font available to the dealer. You could just walk in -- order and off you go. After the autumn of 1969, HD dealers could only order cases or frames WITH the number stamped by the factory -- not the dealer. The dealer had to turn in the numbered part to the MOCO to receive the replacement. So, you as the consumer couldn't get your hands on these parts without turning in a part. \\ |

* If your bike was a late 1971 or a 1972 with the standard seat, it may have come with any combo of the early and late key/coil positions. \\ If you ask any knowledgeable 67-69 restorer, \\ They will tell you if you take 3 different original bikes, you may have 3 different setups concerning different parts right from the factory. \\ Some of this reappeared in 71/72 model years. Though it most likely retained the earlier stuff.
