F

Feeler Gauge

A thin metal hardened blade that has been machined to a specific size that is stamped into it. Usually bought as a set and used for measuring small distances as in crankshaft, cam, connecting rod endplay, spark plug gap, warp-age in heads etc.

FE Head

Slang for Ironhead - FE is this abbreviation for the element Iron on the Periodical Table

Final Drive

The ratio between the transmission and the rear wheel, reflects number of final gear revolutions to turn the rear wheel one full turn by way of belt, chain or shaft.

Flash Point

Minimum temperature at which a fluid will support instantaneous combustion, but before it will burn continuously. The flash point is an important indicator when determining the fire and explosion hazard of a petroleum product.1)

Flooded

A condition in which the carburetor float bowl/ orifices are overfull of gas which causes overflow to the engine/ stalling of the engine/ miss-starts

Foo Foo Valve

Same as- a one way crankcase ventilation/ breather valve 2)

Fork Offset

Fork offset is the distance measured between the steering neck centerline axis and the axis of the fork tubes 3)

Forty-Eight®

In the 2010 model year, Harley-Davidson introduced the XL1200X “Forty-Eight” model. It is similar to the “Dark” Nightster style but has the classic 1948 style small peanut tank, wire wheels, forward-controls, a wider front tire with a fat front end and chopped front fender, a slammed speedo with under mount mirrors, low solo single seat, and low suspension the 2010 model year, Harley-Davidson introduced the XL1200X “Forty-Eight” model. Friction

The resistance that occurs when one object is moved on another object. The friction depends on the smoothness of the sliding surfaces and on the force used to press them on one another.5)
