G'Day

Hello! 1)

Galah

Fool, named after the bird of the same name which flies south in the winter - a bloody silly thing to do in the Southern Hemisphere 2)

Galling or Thread Galling

Thread Galling occurs during fastener tightening and installation. When pressure builds between the contacting surfaces of the male and female threads, the protective oxides or coatings begin to shear which causes high points, or imperfections, in the raw material and the two pieces to become locked together. Increased friction causes the two parts to seize or “lock-up”. In serious cases, this difficultly understood problem is even referred to as “cold welding”, which illustrates the severity of the issue. Often, galling can cause damage to the thread of the fastener, but it can still be removed. In severe cases, the two materials completely weld together preventing loosening of the parts, and adding the difficult step of a forced removal and new parts to the process. The frustrating aspect of this is that both the nut and bolt can clear inspection individually, but fail to function effectively as a mechanical unit. 3)

Gap

  • The distance the spark must travel to jump from the center electrode to the side electrode of a spark plug 4)
  • The distance between the ignition rotor and the pickup coil in an electronic ignition system 5)

Garbo, garbologist

Municipal garbage collector 6)

Garn

Short for “Go and get xxxxed!”. Can also be used as a friendly greeting. 7)

Gasket

A thin material (cork, paper, asbestos or metal) sandwiched between two parts to seal the joint between them

Gassing Out

After painting with a solvent base, you have to let it cure before handling, repainting. During this curing process, the solvent evaporates from the paint or (gases out).8)

Gauge

  • A tool for measuring. Examples include a slide caliper for outside surface and minor depth measurements, snap gauge (telescoping bore gauge) for measuring ID of bores or round holes, a depth gauge for measuring just that, dial indicator w/ magnetic stand for sideplay, trueness of shafts, valve, cam lift etc.
  • Instrument panel display for monitoring engine conditions, speed, RPMs, oil temp, oil pressure etc.

Gear Ratio

The drive ratio of a pair of gears as calculated by their number of teeth. 9)

Give it a burl

Try it, have a go 10)

Gobful, give a

To abuse, usually justifiably (“The neighbours were having a noisy party so I went and gave them a gobful”) 11)

Going off

Used to describe something like a party that's in full swing - “the place was really going off” 12)

Liquor, beer (“bring your own grog, you bludger”) 16)

Grouse

Great, terrific, very good 17)

Growereling

A syncopated pandemonium that is the gathering of XLs. A sound when amongst other Sportster pedigrees, is much like the sound of bombers in WW2 formation. Growel, growel whir growel, in phase and out..very dinstictive. 18)

Gross Axel Weight Rating - Front (GAWR-FRONT) or Rear (GAWR-Rear)

The gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is the maximum distributed weight that may be supported by an axle of a road vehicle. Typically, GAWR is followed by either the letters FR or RR, which indicate front or rear axles respectively.19)

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

The maximum weight a vehicle is designed to carry including the net weight of the vehicle with accessories, plus the weight of passengers, fuel, and cargo. The GVWR is a safety standard used to prevent overloading.20)

Ground Clearance

Grundies

Daggy underwear like big floppy Y fronts 21)

Gudgeon Pin

Piston pin or wrist pin 22) Holds the piston onto the connecting rod.

Gutful of piss

Drunk, “he's got a gutful of piss” 23)
