Below are lists of fasteners known to be used on Sportsters as listed in the factory parts catalogs.
This list is not meant to replace the parts catalogs. You should have a full parts catalog that covers your year model bike.
The listings below are an attempt to display the year span certain fasteners were used or available, their sizes and to help explain discrepancies in the parts books.
In searching screws and bolts in the HD parts catalogs, the following discrepancies can be found.

• Some part#s are listed in the older books but never show up being used on anything.
• Some change length (or from course to fine threads) from one book to the next.
  And then change back to the first length in the next book.
• A few parts books note corrections to previous bolt lengths or models used on.
• Some part numbers are listed as used from year to year. Some are never noted as to when the part was stopped being used.
• Some parts are listed as being used on 54-up models but were not available until many years after the 'used on' beginning date.
• Some fasteners are specific to a kit that may retrofit to earlier models.
• Some fastener changes appear to be related to either availability, cosmetics or material makeup (cad, chrome plated, black etc).
• Some books show a part extending past the end date for that part's use and is corrected in later year parts books.
• Most importantly, the parts books show what parts were available at the time the book was written.
  If a part had a design change and retro'd to earlier years, the newer parts for the updated one will be shown instead of the original ones.
  Likewise, occasionally there are part numbers for bolts / screws for the same application.
  It sometimes depends on if you are using the original or an updated part that may require a shorter or longer fastener than the original part required.
